Best Time to Visit Lombok: Month-by-Month Weather Guide

Dry season runs May–October with the clearest skies in July–August. But shoulder months (April, October) offer green landscapes and fewer crowds — here's how to choose.

The short answer: Lombok is worth visiting any time of year, but **May through September** gives you the most reliable weather, the best surf conditions, and the easiest logistics for day trips and trekking.

The longer answer is more nuanced — and knowing it helps you pick the timing that actually fits what you want to do.

We've been based in Kuta Lombok for over seven years, watching every season come around multiple times. Here's how it actually works.

Lombok's Two Seasons

Lombok has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons:

  • **Dry season**: April–October (peak: July–September)
  • **Wet season**: November–March (peak: January–February)

The transition months — April and October — can go either way, but they're often excellent for visiting: lower prices, green landscapes, and weather that's more predictable than the wet season without the peak-season crowds.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January – February: Wet Season Peak

The wettest months. Expect daily rain, usually in the afternoon or evening — the mornings are often clear, which means you can still do things if you plan early. Temperatures are slightly higher (28–32°C) and humidity is at its peak.

Accommodation is cheaper, beaches are quieter, and Lombok looks genuinely lush. The risk: some day trips become impractical, and the Gili Islands get rougher boat crossings. Mount Rinjani is closed.

**Good for**: Budget travel, quiet beaches, lush landscapes. **Skip if**: You're planning heavy outdoor activities, trekking, or Rinjani.

March: Transitioning Out

Rain becomes less predictable — some days are dry, others wet. Not the best time to plan specific activities, but occasionally excellent. Worth considering if prices matter and you're flexible.

April: Shoulder Season Begins

April is an underrated month. Rain has mostly passed, the island is still green from the wet season, and prices haven't shifted to peak rates yet. We often recommend April to people who ask about quieter, cheaper visits with good weather.

Surf at spots like Mawi and Selong Belanak starts picking up. Rinjani reopens in April.

**Good for**: Value trips, surf beginners, green landscapes, smaller crowds.

May: The Sweet Spot

May is consistently one of the best months to visit Lombok. Reliable sun, comfortable temperatures (26–30°C), decent swell for surfers, and the island is still green before the dry season parches the vegetation. It's before the peak season rush but well into reliable weather.

**Good for**: Most visitors. Particularly good for trekking Rinjani (cooler temperatures than July–August), surfing, and day trips.

June: Building Toward Peak

Good weather continues, swell picks up further, and the surf spots around Kuta — especially Mawi and Gerupuk — start seeing better conditions. Still not as crowded as July–August.

July – August: Peak Season

The most popular months for good reason: clearest skies, most consistent offshore winds for surf, best diving visibility, and the most reliable conditions for Rinjani. The trade-offs: highest accommodation prices, Gili Islands get crowded, and popular spots like Mawi get busy early in the morning.

If you're coming for the surf, July–August is when spots like Mawi and Ekas perform at their best. If you're primarily interested in beaches and exploration, June or September often offer similar conditions without the peak pricing.

Temperatures: 25–30°C. Rainfall: minimal.

**Good for**: Surf (dry season swell and winds), diving, Rinjani, beach trips. **Worth knowing**: Book accommodation further in advance, especially on the Gili Islands.

September: Still Excellent

Peak season technically continues through September, though crowds start thinning toward the end of the month. Surf is still good, weather is reliable, and prices often start coming down after the European and Australian school holiday peak.

An excellent month that often gets overlooked in favour of July–August.

October: Second Shoulder Season

Similar to April — the shoulder season after peak. Weather is still mostly dry, landscapes are starting to green up again, and prices drop. Occasional wet days, but nothing dramatic. Rinjani is usually still open early October.

**Good for**: Value visits with mostly dry weather. Fewer crowds than peak season.

November: Wet Season Begins

The rains return, usually gradually at first. Visits are still manageable if you're flexible and plan outdoor activities in the mornings. Prices drop significantly.

December: Wet Season Continues

Similar to November, with rain becoming more frequent. The Christmas–New Year period sees a short spike in visitors (and prices) even in the wet season. Otherwise a quiet month.

Best Time for Specific Activities

| Activity | Best Months | Notes | |---|---|---| | **Surf (Mawi, Ekas)** | May–September | Dry season swell and offshore winds | | **Surf (Selong Belanak)** | Year-round | Beach break works in all seasons | | **Mount Rinjani trek** | April–October | Closed November–March | | **Diving & snorkelling** | May–October | Best visibility | | **Beach, relaxing** | April–October | Dry, sunny, comfortable | | **Budget travel** | November–March | Low season prices, manageable rain | | **Quiet beaches** | November–April | Fewer tourists, more space |

Weather in Kuta Lombok Specifically

The south coast where Kuta sits can behave slightly differently from northern Lombok. The swell exposure here is higher — which is great for surfing but means the water is less calm than sheltered northern bays. Temperatures in the south are consistent year-round: 24–32°C depending on time of day and season.

Wind is a significant factor for surfers: morning offshore winds are most consistent May–September. By mid-morning, onshore winds start picking up, which is why the surf culture here runs on early sessions.

Practical Notes for Planning

**Book ahead for July–August**: Particularly for Gili Islands accommodation. The Gilis and Kuta both get full during European summer holidays.

**Rinjani trek**: The mountain is officially closed during the wet season (November to March). April and October opening depends on conditions. May–June and September are popular alternatives to the peak months with fewer people on the trail.

**Getting here**: Lombok International Airport (LOP) has direct connections from Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Singapore. Bali is 20–30 minutes by flight or 4–5 hours by fast boat.
