Beaches Within 25 Minutes of Kuta Lombok
Four beaches within a 25-minute scooter ride of Kuta Lombok โ each one worth visiting for different reasons.
One of the practical advantages of staying in Kuta Lombok is how many beaches are within easy reach. Most of the coast here is still quiet โ no big resort strips, no heavy traffic โ so you can get to a genuinely good beach in under half an hour without planning much around it. Here's a rundown of the four closest, what each one offers, and when they're worth going.
Seger Beach โ 5 Minutes East
The closest beach to Kuta centre, just east along the coast road. Seger is a local beach: fishing boats pulled up on the sand, a surf break offshore (Seger Reef), and a couple of small hills you can climb for a view back over the Mandalika area and Kuta Bay. It's not a swimming beach โ the shore is a bit rocky and the current can be unpredictable โ but it's a good place for a walk, especially in the late afternoon. The hills give you a free elevated view without the crowds you'll find at Merese Hill. Good if you want a quick beach fix without going far.
Tanjung Aan โ 15-20 Minutes East
The standout beach in this area and the one most worth the ride. Tanjung Aan is a large, protected bay with calm, clear water that's genuinely good for swimming โ rare among the beaches near Kuta, which tend to have more surf exposure. The bay is also notable for having two distinct types of sand: a pellet-like "moon sand" on the eastern end and fine white powder on the western end near the hill. Worth walking to both.
Merese Hill (Bukit Merese) sits at the western end of the bay and is a 10-15 minute walk up. The view from the top covers the full sweep of Tanjung Aan and the coastline to the west. It's the best-known sunset spot in the area โ get there 30-40 minutes before sundown. There's a row of warungs on the beach for food and drinks. More detail in our [Tanjung Aan guide](/blog/tanjung-aan-beach-a-must-visit-classic-near-kuta-lombok).
Mawun Beach โ 20-25 Minutes West
Drive west from Kuta, past Are Guling, and you'll drop down into a sheltered crescent bay framed by green hills on both sides. Mawun is one of the quieter beaches in the area โ the geography keeps the water calm and the crowds tend to be smaller than at Tanjung Aan. It's a good swimming beach and a reliable spot if you want somewhere peaceful to spend a few hours without much going on. There are a few basic warungs in the parking area. The road in is sealed but narrow toward the end โ easy on a scooter, slower in a car.
Selong Belanak โ 25-30 Minutes West
Just past the 25-minute mark depending on pace, Selong Belanak is a long, sweeping bay best known as a beginner surf beach. The waves roll in consistently and gently along most of the bay, and there are board rentals and surf instructors operating directly on the beach. If you're new to surfing or want a lesson, this is the most practical spot in the area to start. The beach itself is broad and sandy, and the row of warungs behind it serves solid local food. It tends to be livelier than Mawun โ more people in the water, more activity โ which is either a plus or a minus depending on what you're after.
Logistics
All four beaches are reachable by scooter from Kuta on sealed roads. Seger and Tanjung Aan are east; Mawun and Selong Belanak are west. Parking at most beaches costs 10,000 IDR for a scooter. Scooter rental in Kuta runs around 70,000-100,000 IDR per day. If you don't want to ride yourself, ojek (motorbike taxi) and car drivers are easy to arrange in town.
A reasonable day trip from Kuta: head east to Tanjung Aan in the morning when the light is good and the beach is less crowded, swim and walk up Merese Hill, then head back west to Mawun or Selong Belanak in the afternoon before returning to Kuta for dinner.
