The Sekotong Islands: A Day Trip Worth the Drive

The Sekotong Islands in southwest Lombok are among the quietest and best-preserved spots in the region โ€” good snorkeling, white sand, and very few people.

Most visitors to South Lombok head east toward Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk. The Sekotong peninsula, to the southwest, gets far less traffic โ€” which is precisely what makes it worth the effort. It's a longer trip from Kuta than most day outings, but the payoff is a cluster of small islands with clear water, good reefs, and the kind of quiet that's getting harder to find as Lombok develops.

Getting There from Kuta

From Kuta Lombok, Sekotong is roughly 1.5 hours by scooter โ€” head west past Selong Belanak and continue along the southern coast road toward the peninsula. The road is mostly sealed and reasonably straightforward, though it winds through hills and coastal villages, so it's not a fast drive. Once you reach the Sekotong area, you'll find local boat operators at the water's edge who run trips to the islands. Negotiating a boat directly with the operators is standard practice; agree on the route, duration, and price before you go.

Budget for a full day. The drive alone is three hours return, and the islands deserve more than a quick stop.

The Main Islands

**Gili Nanggu**

The largest of the three main islands and the best base for snorkeling. The reef around Nanggu is in good condition โ€” healthy coral, reasonable fish diversity, and occasional larger species including reef sharks and turtles if you're patient. There's a small resort on the island, but day visitors are welcome and it doesn't feel crowded. Clear, shallow water makes it accessible for all skill levels.

**Gili Sudak**

A short boat ride from Nanggu. Smaller and simpler โ€” a few warungs, white sand, calm water. Good for a lunch stop. The seafood here is fresh and straightforward; local operators typically grill what's been caught that morning. The snorkeling around Sudak is decent, though slightly less impressive than Nanggu.

**Gili Kedis**

The smallest of the three โ€” little more than a sandbar with some palm trees. There's nothing on it except the view, which is genuinely striking. Kedis works well as a stop on a multi-island circuit rather than a destination on its own. The surrounding water is clear and shallow.

Snorkeling Conditions

Sekotong has the most consistently good snorkeling in the south Lombok region. Unlike spots near Kuta that are affected by surf swell, the islands here sit in more protected water with calmer conditions on most days. May through October (dry season) is the best time to go โ€” good visibility, calmer seas, lower chance of rain. During the wet season (November through April), conditions can deteriorate and boat operators may not run on rough days.

Gear rental is available from boat operators in the area, but quality varies. If snorkeling is a primary goal, bring your own mask and snorkel.

What to Know Before You Go

Bring cash โ€” there are no ATMs on the islands or in the immediate Sekotong area. Bring sunscreen, water, and snacks for the boat, as you can't always predict what will be available on a given day. A dry bag is useful for keeping your phone and valuables safe on the boat.

Accommodation is available on Gili Nanggu if you want to stay overnight, which turns the trip from a rushed day out into something far more relaxed. Most people do it as a day trip from Kuta, but an overnight is worth considering if you have the time.

Is It Worth the Drive from Kuta?

For snorkeling specifically, yes โ€” it's the best option in the region. For a general beach day, Tanjung Aan or Mawun are closer and easier. But if you want to get off the beaten track, see reefs in good condition, and spend a day somewhere genuinely quiet, Sekotong delivers. It feels like a different pace from the more developed south coast.
