How The Spot Approaches Sustainability in Kuta Lombok

Sustainability isn't a marketing angle at The Spot — it's a practical approach to running a business in a place as naturally beautiful as Kuta Lombok.

Here's what that looks like in practice.

What We've Implemented

**LED lighting throughout** — the entire property runs on LED, significantly reducing energy consumption compared to conventional lighting.

**Energy-efficient appliances** — kitchen and common area equipment selected for efficiency, not just function.

**Solar** — solar lights in parts of the property, with a broader solar plan in progress.

**Water management** — carefully managed water use with minimal wastage, important in Lombok's drier months.

**Near-zero food waste** — the kitchen operates with tight waste controls. Over time, we've reduced food waste by around 50% compared to earlier operations. Food is ordered and prepared to minimize surplus.

**The garden** — we haven't cut down any existing trees. The property has over 700 plants and flowers, and we grow some of the fruit and vegetables served in the café on-site. When you order fresh juice or a coconut, the staff sometimes picks it directly from the garden.

Why It Matters Here

Kuta Lombok is a genuinely beautiful part of Indonesia. The draw for visitors — the beaches, surf, clear water, intact nature — is the result of an environment that hasn't been overtouristed or overdeveloped yet.

Businesses operating here have a responsibility to think about how they run. We're not claiming to be perfect. But we do try to make decisions that don't make things worse.

What's Next

Investment in solar panels is planned — moving toward cleaner energy for the main property. We're also continuing to refine food sourcing and storage practices.
