Pink Beach (Tangsi): Snorkeling in East Lombok

Tangsi Beach — known as Pink Beach — sits in East Lombok with coral reefs close to shore and sand that is more strawberry blonde than pink, but worth the trip regardless.

Tangsi Beach earns its nickname from the trace amounts of red coral and shell fragments mixed into the white sand — which in certain light and conditions give the shore a faint pinkish tinge. In practice, the color is closer to strawberry blonde than anything dramatically pink, and it varies by time of day and weather. Manage your expectations on the color and you'll be fine, because the beach itself is genuinely good.

It sits in a sheltered bay on Lombok's east coast, facing Sumbawa across the strait. The water is calm, clear, and shallow near the shore, deepening gradually toward the reef.

Snorkeling

The reef at Tangsi starts relatively close to shore — you can reach decent coral without a boat. Visibility is generally good in the dry season. The marine life includes reef fish, sea turtles (common here), and varied coral formations. The best snorkeling is off the northern end of the bay.

Gear can sometimes be rented from local vendors on the beach, but availability is inconsistent. Bringing your own mask and fins from Kuta is the more reliable option.

Other Activities

  • **Canoeing:** Local canoes can be hired to paddle around the bay. The water is calm enough for beginners.
  • **Swimming:** The bay is sheltered and safe for swimming. Watch for boat traffic near the main beach access.
  • **Photography:** The combination of the sand color, turquoise water, and green hills behind makes for good shots early in the morning.

Practical Info

  • **Distance from Kuta:** Around 100km east — expect 2 to 2.5 hours by car or motorbike via Selong and the coastal road
  • **Getting there:** Rented motorbike or hired car. The road is mostly paved but becomes narrow and rough in the final stretch
  • **Best time to visit:** Dry season (May–October) for clear water and calm seas. April and November can be hit-or-miss. Arrive before 10am to beat day-trippers from Mataram.
  • **Facilities:** Basic warungs (food stalls) on the beach. Limited shade. Bring your own water and snacks.
  • **Entrance fee:** Small local fee at the gate, usually IDR 5,000–10,000

Combining with Other Stops

The east coast drive from Kuta passes through some good scenery. Ekas Bay, the Ekas surf break, and the Jerowaru area are all on the way. The road to Pink Beach also passes close to Tanjung Ringgit — see [the Tanjung Ringgit hiking guide](/blog/go-for-a-hike-in-tanjung-ringgit) if you want to combine both in a full day out east.

The Spot in Kuta is the logical starting point for this trip. It's a 2–2.5 hour drive, making an early departure worthwhile. Check [accommodation options](/cowork) if you need a place to base yourself.
