Jamu: Indonesia's Traditional Herbal Drink and Why It's on Our Menu

Jamu is one of those things that's been part of Indonesian life for over a thousand years but often goes unnoticed by visitors who don't know to look for it.

It's a traditional herbal drink — made from roots, spices, plants, and flowers — used across Indonesia as a daily wellness practice. Not medicine in the clinical sense, but a way of maintaining balance using what the natural world provides.

What's in It

The base ingredients vary by recipe, but common components include:

• **Turmeric** — anti-inflammatory, gives the drink its characteristic yellow-orange color
• **Ginger** — digestive, warming
• **Galangal** — a relative of ginger with a sharper, more piney flavor
