Tanjung Poki: Blowholes and Wave Formations in South Lombok

Tanjung Poki is a rocky headland near Kuta where limestone formations with natural blowholes send columns of seawater shooting upward at high tide.

Tanjung Poki sits on the south coast of Lombok a short distance from Kuta. The geology here is limestone โ€” flat, fractured, and riddled with holes and crevices carved out over thousands of years by wave action. At high tide, incoming swells force seawater through these cavities and up through the surface holes, creating blowholes that shoot columns of water several meters into the air.

The effect depends entirely on the tide and swell. At peak conditions โ€” big swell, high tide โ€” the blowhole eruptions can be dramatic. On a flat, low-tide day, you'll see very little. Check tide tables before making the trip.

What the Site Is Like

The coastline at Tanjung Poki is raw and undeveloped. The limestone shelf extends into the sea and the ground around the blowholes is uneven, jagged, and slippery when wet. There are no barriers or safety rails. Getting close enough for a good view is fine; getting too close when a set comes in is not โ€” the water can surge unpredictably across the rock shelf.

Beyond the blowholes themselves, the scenery is worth the stop. The exposed coastline, the rocky formations, and the surf crashing against the limestone have a stark, dramatic quality that differs from Lombok's sandy beaches. Sunset from this headland is particularly good.

Practical Info

  • **Distance from Kuta:** Approximately 10โ€“15km, roughly 20โ€“25 minutes by motorbike
  • **Getting there:** Rented scooter is the easiest option. The road is paved.
  • **Best time:** High tide during a moderate to large south swell. Check a tide app (Tides Near Me or similar) before going. Early morning or late afternoon light is better for photography.
  • **What to wear:** Closed shoes or thick sandals โ€” the limestone is sharp
  • **Facilities:** None at the site. Bring water.
  • **Combine with:** Selong Belanak (west), Mawun, or Semeti Beach โ€” all within reasonable distance on the same coastal road

A Note on Safety

Do not stand directly over or beside the blowhole openings when swell is running. The force of the water discharge is significant, and the surrounding rock gets extremely slippery. Watch where waves are reaching before you walk onto the shelf.

Tanjung Poki is a quick, easy addition to a day out from Kuta โ€” close enough to visit in an afternoon.
