How We Use Starlink at The Spot: Our Internet Backup System

The Spot runs fibre as primary and Starlink as backup โ€” so when the local ISP has issues, you stay online. Here's how the setup works and what it means for remote workers.

The biggest concern most remote workers have about working from Lombok is internet reliability. Kuta is not a major city. The local infrastructure has had its issues.

We've spent several years working on fixing that. Here's what we're running.

The Setup

**Primary**: Fibre connection โ€” fast, low-latency, handles video calls and large file transfers without issue.

**Backup**: Starlink โ€” satellite internet that bypasses local infrastructure entirely. When the local fibre ISP has an outage, Starlink takes over automatically. No manual switching, no downtime you'd notice mid-call.

This combination means that the two most common failure modes โ€” local ISP outage and cable infrastructure issues โ€” are covered independently. The only scenario that takes us offline is if both fail simultaneously, which hasn't happened.

Why It Matters in Kuta Lombok

Indonesia's internet infrastructure is improving rapidly, but it's still inconsistent in places. Kuta Lombok has better connectivity than it did five years ago, but local outages still happen โ€” usually brief, sometimes longer.

For a coworking space, intermittent internet isn't acceptable. Our members book day passes and memberships on the assumption that they can work reliably. The Starlink backup is how we back that up.

What You Can Expect

  • **Dedicated speeds**: 30+ Mbps download per device in the coworking area
  • **Latency**: ~2ms on the primary fibre connection
  • **Video calls**: Reliable โ€” tested with Zoom, Google Meet, Teams
  • **File transfers**: No issues with cloud syncing, large uploads, or collaborative tools

If you're a remote worker who's been burned by bad internet at other Lombok venues, [come and test it yourself](/cowork) โ€” day passes from Rp 100.000.
