Mangku Sakti Waterfall: A Remote Jungle Trek in Lombok's Interior

Mangku Sakti is a series of cascading cataracts deep in Lombok's jungle interior, reached by a narrow forest trek and more remote than the popular Benang Kelambu falls.

Mangku Sakti is not a single waterfall but a series of cascading cataracts that descend through a forested gorge in Lombok's interior highlands. Unlike the wider, more photogenic curtain of Benang Kelambu, Mangku Sakti is narrower and more powerful — the water forces through tight rock channels and drops between boulders in a sequence of falls rather than one clear plunge.

It is less visited and more demanding to reach. That combination is the main reason to go.

The Trek

The trail to Mangku Sakti runs through dense jungle on narrow, often unmarked paths. Navigation is easier with a local guide, which can be arranged in nearby villages. The hike involves some scrambling over rocks and roots, crossing small streams, and pushing through sections of thick vegetation. Expect 30 to 60 minutes one way depending on the route and conditions.

The path gets significantly harder after rain — sections become slippery, and streams can rise. This is not a trek to attempt in flip-flops or in the immediate aftermath of heavy rain.

At the Falls

The cascade sequence runs through a gorge with large boulders and natural rock pools. Swimming is possible in some of the calmer pools, but caution is warranted — the current is fast in the upper sections, and in wet season the volume of water increases substantially. The lower pools are generally safer.

The jungle surrounding the falls is dense and largely undisturbed. You're unlikely to encounter other tourists, particularly on weekdays.

Practical Info

  • **Location:** North Lombok interior, in the general area of Aik Berik and the Rinjani foothills
  • **Distance from Kuta:** Approximately 80–90km, around 1.5 to 2 hours by car
  • **Getting there:** Hired car or motorbike to the trailhead village; a local guide from the village is strongly recommended
  • **Guide cost:** Negotiate locally, typically IDR 100,000–150,000 for a half-day guide
  • **Best time:** Dry season (May–October). The trail is passable in wet season but significantly harder. Arrive early — afternoon thunderstorms are common in the hills.
  • **What to bring:** Sturdy shoes with grip, long trousers (vegetation), plenty of water, swimwear, insect repellent
  • **Time needed:** Half day minimum, or combine with Benang Kelambu on a full-day itinerary

Benang Kelambu vs. Mangku Sakti

Both falls are in the same general area. Benang Kelambu is easier to reach, more developed, and better for casual visitors. Mangku Sakti is harder to find, less visited, and more suited to people who actually want a proper jungle trek. They complement each other well if you have a full day — see the [Benang Kelambu guide](/blog/trek-to-benang-kelambu-waterfall) for details on the easier option.

The Spot in Kuta is the base for both waterfalls. It's a 1.5 to 2-hour drive north, making it a full day out. Check [accommodation and coworking options](/cowork) if you're staying in Kuta Lombok.
