Sukarara Village: Traditional Hand-Woven Textiles in Central Lombok

Sukarara Village in Central Lombok is home to some of Lombok's finest traditional weavers, producing tenun ikat and gold and silver thread tenun songket on hand looms.

Sukarara is a village in Central Lombok where hand-weaving has been the primary craft for centuries. The textiles produced here are among the finest traditional examples of Sasak weaving — complex, labor-intensive, and genuinely sought after by collectors and buyers throughout Indonesia.

Two main weaving traditions come from this village:

  • **Tenun ikat:** A technique where threads are dyed in precise patterns before weaving begins, using a resist-dyeing method (similar to batik but applied to thread rather than fabric). Traditionally made by men in some Sasak communities.
  • **Tenun songket:** A supplementary weft weaving technique where gold or silver metallic thread is woven into the base fabric, creating raised geometric patterns. This is more labor-intensive and commands higher prices.

At the Village

Sukarara functions as both a working weaving community and a visitor destination. Weaving cooperatives and family workshops are open to visitors, and you can watch weavers at the hand loom — a back-strap or frame loom depending on the piece being made.

The process is slow. A single length of songket with gold thread can take days or weeks to complete. Watching a weaver work, even briefly, gives a useful sense of what goes into the finished pieces and why the prices are what they are.

Most workshops have pieces for sale: full fabric lengths, scarves, and smaller items. Prices range from affordable (simple ikat scarves) to several hundred thousand rupiah for complex songket lengths. Bargaining is expected but not aggressive — this is skilled craft, not tourist trinkets.

Workshops

Some cooperatives offer brief hands-on weaving sessions where visitors can try the loom. These take 15–30 minutes and give a direct sense of how difficult the technique is. Arrange this directly with the workshop; there is usually a small fee or it is included in a purchase.

Combine With

Sukarara pairs naturally with Beleq Village (traditional Sasak architecture — see the [Beleq Village guide](/blog/tour-beleq-village)) for a full Central Lombok cultural day. Both are within reasonable distance of each other and cover different aspects of Sasak heritage.

The Spot in Kuta is about 1 to 1.5 hours from Sukarara, making it a comfortable day trip. It's the kind of stop that rewards visitors who want to understand Lombok beyond its beaches. See [accommodation and coworking options](/cowork) if you're planning several days on the island.
