Your Guide to a Surf Trip in Lombok: Spots, Season, and Logistics

From beginner beach breaks to expert barrel spots — a complete guide to planning a surf trip to Lombok, including the main spots, best season, and what to bring.

Lombok's surf is world-class, and still less crowded than comparable spots in Bali. The south coast around Kuta offers a range of breaks within 30-40 minutes of each other — from forgiving beach breaks for beginners to hollow reef waves that draw experienced surfers from across the region.

Here's what you need to plan a surf trip.

The Main Surf Spots

Selong Belanak — Beginner and Intermediate

A long crescent bay with a consistent beach break over sand. Gentle, rolling waves that give you time on the board. The most beginner-friendly spot in South Lombok.

  • **Best time**: April–October
  • **Wave size**: 3–5ft
  • **Tide**: Mid tide
  • **Access**: Paddle out from the beach
  • **Level**: Beginner to intermediate — left and right breaks
  • **Distance from Kuta**: ~30 minutes west

Tanjung Aan — All Levels

Postcard scenery with a range of waves. More varied than Selong Belanak, but accessible to lower-intermediate surfers when the swell is manageable.

  • **Best time**: April–October
  • **Wave size**: 4–5ft
  • **Tide**: Mid to high tide
  • **Access**: Paddle out, or surf boat (~Rp 25.000 each way)
  • **Level**: Beginner-friendly at smaller sizes — A-frame left and right
  • **Distance from Kuta**: ~15 minutes

Gerupuk Bay — All Levels, Multiple Breaks

A sheltered bay with boat access and multiple breaks in the same area. Good for groups with different ability levels — the inside section is mellow, the outside is more demanding.

  • **Best time**: April–October
  • **Wave size**: 3.5–5ft
  • **Tide**: Mid to high tide
  • **Access**: Boat from the beach (~Rp 200–250k total per boat — split the cost)
  • **Level**: Kiddies right (beginner), Gerupuk inside (beginner/intermediate), Gerupuk outside (intermediate/expert)
  • **Distance from Kuta**: ~10 minutes east

Mawi — Intermediate to Advanced

An A-frame reef break with a solid right-hander and a left that can barrel on low tide during dry season swells. One of the most consistent dry-season spots in South Lombok.

  • **Best time**: May–September
  • **Wave size**: 4–5ft
  • **Tide**: Mellower on high tide, best on mid tide
  • **Access**: Short walk down to the beach, then paddle out
  • **Level**: Intermediate to advanced
  • **Board rental**: Not available on-site
  • **Distance from Kuta**: ~15 minutes west

Ekas Bay — Intermediate to Expert, Uncrowded

Further east than most people bother going, which is why it's quiet. A quality left-hander that works well on the right swell.

  • **Best time**: April–October
  • **Level**: Intermediate to advanced
  • **Distance from Kuta**: ~45 minutes east

Desert Point (Bangko-Bangko) — Expert Only

One of the most famous barrel waves in Indonesia. Long, hollow left-handers at low tide. Not a tourist spot — this is for experienced surfers only.

  • **Best time**: May–October
  • **Wave size**: Up to 10ft
  • **Tide**: Low tide only
  • **Level**: Expert only
  • **Distance from Kuta**: ~2.5 hours west

When to Go

**Prime season**: April–October (dry season). Offshore winds most consistent in the mornings, reliable swell, clean conditions. Peak months are June–August.

**Shoulder season**: April and October — still good, fewer people.

**Wet season**: November–March. Selong Belanak and Gerupuk work year-round. Exposed reef breaks are less consistent and conditions are more variable.

The daily surf window in Kuta Lombok: offshore winds are best from sunrise until around 10–11am. By mid-morning the onshore winds pick up and the surface chops. Most sessions here are early.

Equipment

Board rentals are available in Kuta town and at some spots directly. Prices start from Rp 50–100k/day. Bring your own leash and wax if you have preferences — rental boards are basic.

What to pack: - Rashguard or lightweight spring suit (dry season) - Reef booties if you're surfing shallow reefs - Reef-safe zinc sunscreen — equatorial sun is intense - Hat and water for the scooter rides between spots

Staying in Kuta

Kuta Lombok is the natural base for surfing South Lombok. Scooter rentals (Rp 60–80k/day) give you independent access to all spots.

[The Spot](/cowork) is in central Kuta — coworking, café, and accommodation. Morning surf, then work, then afternoon beach is the standard rhythm for long-stay surfers here. [Surf spots in detail](/blog/surf-spots-in-south-lombok) covers each break in more depth.
