Gili Nanggu: Lombok's Quiet Island Day Trip

Gili Nanggu is a small, quiet island off southwest Lombok — white sand, coral reefs, snorkeling, and almost no crowds. Here's how to visit from Kuta.

Gili Nanggu is one of the Sekotong Islands off the southwest coast of Lombok — a small, quiet island with white sand beaches, clear water, and good snorkeling around its coral reefs. It doesn't have the name recognition of the Gili Islands (Trawangan, Air, Meno), which is partly why it's worth going.

What to Expect

**The beach**: Soft white sand, shallow clear water on the protected side. Good for swimming and simply being at the beach without crowds.

**Snorkeling**: The coral reefs surrounding Gili Nanggu are healthy and varied. Clownfish, reef fish, and sea turtles are common. The calm, clear water makes it accessible even for beginners.

**The vibe**: Quiet. There's a small resort on the island, some local food options, and not much else. That's the point.

Getting There

Gili Nanggu is reached by boat from the Sekotong area on Lombok's southwest coast — about 1.5 hours from Kuta by scooter, then a short boat crossing.

The easiest approach is a day trip: drive to Sekotong, arrange a boat with local operators at the harbor, spend the day on the island, and return in the afternoon. Overnight stays are possible at the island's small resort for those who want to stay.

When to Go

**Dry season (May–October)** is best — clearer water, calmer seas, better snorkeling visibility. The crossing can get rougher during the wet season.

Go on a weekday if possible — Gili Nanggu gets slightly more visitors on weekends, though it's never crowded by broader standards.

Practical Notes

  • Bring your own snorkel gear if you have it — rental availability at the island is limited
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen — the coral here is worth protecting
  • Bring cash — no ATMs on the island
  • Combine with a visit to the other Sekotong Islands (Gili Sudak, Gili Kedis) for a fuller day
