Snorkeling in South Lombok
South Lombok has solid snorkeling within easy reach of Kuta โ if you know which spots to pick and when to go.
South Lombok is better known for surf than for snorkeling, but that's part of what makes it good. There's less pressure, fewer crowds in the water, and the reefs are in decent shape. You just need to pick your spots carefully and pay attention to the swell.
Timing Matters More Than Location
The most important thing to understand about snorkeling in South Lombok: many of the best underwater spots sit directly inside or next to surf breaks. When the swell is up, those spots become difficult or dangerous โ strong currents, murky water, and active lineups. Check the swell forecast before you go. The window between May and October (dry season) tends to offer the most consistent calm-water days, though even during this period, swell can build quickly.
Best Snorkeling Spots
**Gerupuk Bay**
Gerupuk is primarily known as a surf bay, with a cluster of breaks scattered across the bay that you reach by boat. On smaller swell days, the shallow areas inside the bay offer reasonable snorkeling โ coral patches, reef fish, and generally clear water. It's about 20 minutes from Kuta by scooter. The local boat operators who run surf trips can also take you out to snorkel; just ask at the bay.
**Pink Beach (Tangsi Beach)**
Pink Beach is on the east coast of Lombok, roughly 1.5 hours from Kuta depending on road conditions. It's worth the trip if you're making a day of it. The beach gets its color from fragments of red coral mixed into the sand. Snorkeling directly off the beach gives you access to coral gardens with good fish diversity. Conditions here are generally calmer than the exposed south coast breaks, making it a more reliable choice when swell is running. Bring your own gear if you have it โ rental availability varies.
**Sekotong Area**
The Sekotong peninsula and its surrounding small islands in southwest Lombok are the most consistently good snorkeling in the region. Gili Nanggu in particular has clear water, healthy coral, and the kind of marine life โ rays, turtles, reef sharks โ that's harder to find elsewhere along the south coast. The trade-off is distance: from Kuta it's roughly 1.5 hours by scooter to the boat departure point at Sekotong, then a short boat ride to the islands. It works well as a full-day trip. See our [Sekotong guide](/blog/discover-the-enchanting-sekotong-islands-of-lombok-an-unspoiled-paradise) for more detail.
**Selong Belanak**
This long, sheltered bay about 30 minutes west of Kuta is primarily a beginner surf beach, but the northern end of the bay โ away from the break โ can have reasonable snorkeling in calm conditions. Good option if you want to combine a swim with watching people surf.
What to Bring
Rental snorkel gear is available in Kuta and at most beaches, but quality varies. If snorkeling is a priority for your trip, bring your own mask and snorkel โ it makes a significant difference in comfort. Reef shoes are useful at Pink Beach and anywhere with rocky entries.
The Swell Rule
If there are waves over about 1.5 metres at the break nearest your chosen snorkel spot, go somewhere else or wait for a calmer day. The surf spots and snorkel spots in South Lombok often share the same reefs. That's the one rule worth following consistently.
